DIY Project: Revitalizing a Chair - Part 3 of 3

I applied the last coat of paint yesterday. Now, she graces the floor of my living room! The final color is more vibrant than the primed color.

Here's an overview of all the action that took place. I applied my first coat of Herbal Green, but soon realized that I should have been more diligent of ensuring a smooth sanded surface. If you didn't know, it's vital to use a tack cloth or lint-free rag to remove ALL tiny little particles after you complete your initial sanding. This will ensure that you have a smooth surface when you paint. I used a 320 grade sand paper which is great to remove dust spots or marks between finish coats. Some of the color stripped off, so another coat of paint was needed.

Now, I am debating on spraying on a coat of lacquer for additional shine. But, for now, I'm happy with my end result, especially for the original cost of $25!

did you use a latex paint or oil based paint? If you used latex do you think it will be durable enough for moderate to heavy use of the chair?

Love the project!!

Thanks!!!

i used latex - gloss. it should be durable for indoor & outdoor use and especially in high traffic areas.

me again.
what kind of brush did you use? my recent attempt left my project with unsightly brushstrokes (and not the cool worn and beat up look, just a bad paint job, lol)

i used a 2 inch brush that cost roughly $7. there are more economic alternatives but everyone seems to agree... spend the money on a good brush. if your paint is dry, you can use a 320 sandpaper to smooth over the brush strokes. hopefully that will help. what did you end up re-finishing? :)

I love the couch in the background of your last rocking chair picture. Care to share where you found it? Great site, by the way, I love your style!

i got the couch from a dwr sample sale. i believe it's the theatre love seat. i bought it for 298... it's quite small - perfect for 2 ppl at most. i'm planning to use it in my sitting room instead of my living space. thanks for noticing!

Instead of the sandpaper between coats you should use 0000 steel wool. It eliminates all the little air bubbles and leaves a truly beautiful finish. I will even lightly rub the finishing coat with the steel wool because it does such nice things.
